Providing Rural Livelihoods has been one of the main objectives of Charaka Society. But this employment opportunity could not be at the cost of nature. In the ecologically-sensitive area of Malnad, at the foothills of the Western Ghats, where Charaka is situated, large-scale agricultural practices and plantations had degraded the forests. This was the backdrop against which Charaka came into being to provide alternative source of income generation for the agricultural labour, especially to augment their income in the off-season. The processes are eco-friendly using plant-based natural dyes for colouring, very sparse use of electricity for production relying mostly on human labour, practicing a policy of zero-wastage in the production cycle and other initiatives like grey-water treatment, ground water rejuvenation and solar panels for lighting.
